Feathers are made of keratin, which is a lightweight material that also composes our fingernails. Muscles are attached to the base of each feather so that the bird can move it around. Birds go through a process called moulting in which they grow a new set of feathers to replace the old damaged ones. This happens once a year for some birds and twice a year for others.
